Italy

Italy has a wider selection of wines than any other country in the world, and uses over 500 unique grapes to produce them. Italy is most famous for wines made from its indigenous grapes. Wines made in the mountain regions are higher priced with elegant flavours, whilst wines grown on the flatter terrain are more affordable.

Classic Italian Red wines include Barolo made from the Nebbiolo grape, Chianti made from Sangiovese grape, Amarone and Valpolicella made from Corvina and Rondinella grapes and Nero d'Avola made from the grape of the same name.

Italy is also famous for its sparkling Prosecco wines made from the Glera grape and Moscato made from Moscato Bianco.

The most recognisable Italian White wine is Pinot Grigio which is made from the grape of the same name, as well as Gavi made from the Cortese grape.

Italy also successfully makes wines from the international grape varieties Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Canti Barolo DOCG

Barolo is is produced from the Nebbiolo grape and grown around the town bearing the same name and is probably the most famous and most celebrated wine in Italy. Not without reason it was called, in the 19th century, 'The Wine of Kings, the King of Wines'. Initially the colour is deep ruby red changing to garnet toward brick red over time, and it refines its bouquet. The fragrance is intense and varied, ethereal and extremely pleasant. The taste is dry, full-bodied, robust and almost spartan in its expression, yet soft, pleasant and balanced. The wine has a distinctive resilience and complex character which does not appeal to everyone. In addition, the wine’s complexity and harsh tannins may seem extreme, but after learning to know the wine, it opens a very wide palette of flavors.
