Decanting Wine Explained

Many people ask me if they should decant their wine, what should i use to decant the wine and what are the benefits?

Firstly it’s important to know which wines can be decanted and which wines do not need decanting!

As a general rule decanting is beneficial to Red, White and Rose wines.. Only Sparkling wines do not benefit from decanting, because they are best enjoyed when they have their fizziness, which reduces with aeration (similar to how fizzy soft drinks go flat when open too long).

Nearly all wines benefit from decanting, if only for the aeration. Younger strong red wines particularly benefit from decanting because their tannins are more intense. Wines most suited are Full Bodied red wines, for example.. Malbec, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Bordeaux, Barolo, Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The process of decanting is defined as slowly pouring the wine from its bottle into a different container, without disturbing the sediment at the bottom. Wine is often decanted into a crystal-glass vessel with an easy-pour neck. If you pour the wine too quickly, the sediment is disturbed and joins the wine in the decanter, this is undesirable.

So, is it really beneficial to decant wine, the simple answer is YES!

Separating the wine from the sediment is essential as the sediment can taste unpleasant if consumed at the same time as the wine. Red wines contain the most sediment, white wines contain the least sediment.

Decanting enhances the wine's flavour by introducing oxygen replacing the gases that have been produced in the bottle in the absence of oxygen. You have probably heard the term ‘allowing the wine to breathe’, this is where the flavours and aromas expand, having been dormant while bottled.

If you have the unfortunate misfortune to break or damage the cork, decanting can save the wine. Decanting the wine through a strainer will help to remove smaller pieces of cork.

Note: Whilst decanted wine looks impressive to your guests, you should also keep the wine bottle handy so that the guests can see what they are drinking.

There are many different decanters to choose from. Mick’s Wines recommends the crystal decanters produced in Slovakia by Rona.
