The Dornfelder is the most successful German re-breeding of red wines. Its origins go to Wurttemberg, the village of Weinsberg. There, Imanuel Dornfeld, the wine-growing expert, gave the impetus to found the local wine school. August Herold - he lived from 1902 to 1973 - bred there in 1955 the Dornfelder. For this purpose he crossed the varieties of Helfensteiner (a cross between Frühburgunder and Trollinger) and Heroldrebe (a cross between Portugieser and Limberger). It took some years for the variety to establish itself among the winemakers. Initially, it was used to blend with bright red wines to give it a darker color until the potential of the mandrel field was recognized.
