An Introduction to the Wines of Slovakia

To the untrained eye Slovakia might seem like a tiny drop in the sea of wine, but with a long history of winemaking that precedes the Roman Empire by 400 years, Slovak wines shine bright on the international wine map. Today, Slovakia boasts more than 400 official winemakers producing wine on nearly 3,000 acres of vineyards in a fairly cold climate, mostly suitable for growing white wine grapes. Not surprisingly, Slovakia's crisp, fresh rosés and white wines have won many awards in international competitions.

In Slovakia, you'll find a wide variety of grapes: everything from well-known Central European grapes to local varieties you can't find elsewhere. These local varieties are the result of crossbreeding popular grape varieties, from which winemakers create surprising and extraordinary wine.
